Advertising agencies throughout North America will assist 17 New Orleans nonprofit organizations as beneficiaries during National CreateAthon® Week, scheduled for September 10-16, 2006.

In its fifth year, the national CreateAthon event is designed to generate pro bono marketing and creative services for nonprofit organizations by way of a 24-hour creative blitz. Advertising agency staffers work throughout the day and night to provide services such as conceptual development, copywriting and design on projects such as brochures, direct mail, outdoor, radio, television, identity and web development, public relations plans and others.

In addition to the New Orleans nonprofits, CreateAthon agencies will serve more than 150 nonprofits in their local communities during the program this year. The event expects to generate more than 300 projects valued at $1.2 million worth of free marketing and advertising services.

“The nonprofit community in New Orleans has taken an even bigger hit than most for-profit businesses,” said Joanne Gallinghouse, president of Gallinghouse and Associates in Covington, Louisiana, and a CreateAthon partner. “They've been hit by cuts from the government, property and personnel losses, cancellation of major fundraisers, and the loss of individual contributions. CreateAthon is a great way to give back to this sector.”

CreateAthon was founded in 1998 by RIGGS, a marketing and advertising agency headquartered in Columbia, South Carolina. “We saw CreateAthon as a great way for people in our industry to lend their talent and passion to a vast number of social, environmental and educational causes,” said Catherine Monetti, RIGGS president and creative director. “We’re pleased to have agency partners all over the US and Canada volunteer to help nonprofits in the Gulf area restore and sustain their missions.”

Since the program’s expansion to an international effort in 2002, more than 40 advertising agencies from across the United States and Canada have become CreateAthon partners, assisting 685 nonprofits and producing 1,473 projects. The market value of the work produced during the 24-hour events has been estimated at $5.7 million, all at little or no cost to the nonprofits.
